There is no better place in Europe to vacation than in the South of France, just a few miles from the beaches of the Mediterranean, or go the other way into the mountains for an afternoon of fun.   If you are adventuresome and like day trips, that's an easy one too. Barcelona, Nice and Monte Carlo are all within driving distance.

If you are a history buff, there are sights and historical locations to occupy you for days.  If you like antiques, European style, the nearby towns provide many shops. Each of the towns and villages in the area holds a weekly open-air market where vendors sell everything from clothes, flowers, prepared food and vegetables to antiques and much more.

Here in the region of France known as the Languedoc, you are in the middle of wine country and all year round you will see activity as the region prepares, nurtures, harvests and processes the grapes.

A slow pace and easy going relaxation are hallmarks of the area with many shops closing from noon until 2:00 P.M. Many of the village streets, like those shown here, are enjoyable routes for an early morning or evening walk.

 

In the village of St. Thibery (itself over 2,000 years old), you will find a variety of shops including 2 bakeries, a grocery store, flower and vegetable market, a fish market, two restaurants and bars and a hotel with a dining room. You are only a few minutes away from the larger towns of Pezenas and Beziers where you will find larger stores, shops and amenities. Restaurants? The area abounds with excellent restaurants that are open for lunch and dinner serving a wide variety of continental food, seafood and pasta.  Several of the restaurants also have English language menus, but in any case you will be hard put to find a restaurant where you can’t have an outstanding meal and excellent service.
