THE AREA OF ST. THIBERY
St Thibery dates back to Roman times, when it straddled the Via Domitania, the main road from Rome to Spain. Today Autoroute A9 is only 2 miles away (Agde exit 34) so the village is convenient to the 21st century road network, while off main roads, and therefore retaining its quiet village peacefulness.
The village itself provides for most everyday needs with a weekly market every Tuesday
morning, 2 bakeries, news stand, vegetable and flower shop, butcher, fish shop,
small supermarket, 2 bars and there is a well-stocked supermarket only 2 miles
down the road towards Bessan.
Because of the proximity to Autoroute A9, St Thibery makes an ideal home base
for exploring the countryside, from Barcelona in Spain (about 3 hours), the
medieval walled city of Carcassonne (1 hour); and to the cities of Nimes and
Arles.
There is plenty to see in St. Thibery, too! The delights of St Thibery include
the medieval bridge just a couple hundred yards from the house, the remains of
the Pont Romain, which carried the Via Domitania over the river Herault, the old
Benedictine abbey church, many house fronts dating from the 14th
century and an impressive natural basalt formation.
Within easy driving distance there is a vast length of clean, safe
child-friendly beach stretching all the way from Sete to Agde, which, even in
August does not get overcrowded. Additionally, there are numerous nearby coastal
resorts and fishing villages offering a wide range of seaside facilities and
nightlife – including excellent eating.
Only 5 minutes away is the larger town of Pezenas
often called the little Versailles,
home of the playwright Moliere and Louise XIV’s court in the Languedoc. The
acres of vines in the area reminds us that we are in the heart of wine country.
Many of the local domains keep open house for free tasting!
The gourmet in you will not be disappointed with this area. From outstanding
seafood dishes on the coast to feasts in the little restaurants hidden away in
small villages, there is something for every taste and pocket.
The historic Cathar stronghold of Beziers is a 20 minute drive. This is the
home of Rugby in France. Half an hour to the East is the university town of
Montpellier with plenty of artistic, musical and theatrical activity and endless
stores for the shopper.
